1. Explain exhaustively the role of the Nurse Manager as an Organizer, a Director, and a Controller.
The Nurse Manager plays an essential role in healthcare. She sets the tone of any Healthcare System. The Manager is the backbone of the organization. The quality of patient care, as well as staff recruitment and retention success, rests with this key role. Over time it will be the strength of the nurse manager group that determines the success or failure of nursing leadership.
The nurse manager (NM) holds line management position with operational responsibility that includes patient care management, human resource management, fiscal and material resource management, 24-hour accountability for one or more patient care unit(s), and may or may not report to the highest level nursing management position in the institution/setting
As a controller: A nurse has a process of evaluating, measuring and feedback function. A controller is the one who sets standards for evaluation purposes, the one who check and make reports on performance and seeks for connective actions and also function for employee or subordinate evaluation.
As a organizer: A nurse has a process of forming a system into a organic whole and making an arrangement of each working order especially in determining the needs of staff and the nurse organizer is responsible in processing the personal job description and qualification. And also the one who set rules and regulation of one institution.
As a director: A nurse that deal with the responsibilities of directing,
The structure and composition of the hoard, and the Appointment of suitable individuals. The basic legal duties of directors are to act in good faith in the interests of an institution and for a proper purpose; And to exercise care and skill.

Then choose a Nurse Manager (except me, please) whom you have observed this 2nd semester (it could be a Chief Nurse, Supervisor, Staff Nurse, CI, Dean, Coordinator) and describe which leadership style do you think is used by your chosen nurse manager. Explain why you think it is the style used. Moreover, identify the good and bad points of the leadership style selected.
Authoritarian Leadership (Autocratic)
Authoritarian leaders provide clear expectations for what needs to be done, when it should be done, and how it should be done. There is also a clear division between the leader and the followers. Authoritarian leaders make decisions independently with little or no input from the rest of the group.
Researchers found that decision-making was less creative under authoritarian leadership. Lewin also found that it is more difficult to move from an authoritarian style to a democratic style than vice versa. Abuse of this style is usually viewed as controlling, bossy, and dictatorial.
Authoritarian leadership is best applied to situations where there is little time for group decision-making or where the leader is the most knowledgeable member of the group.
Participative Leadership (Democratic)
Lewin’s study found that participative (democratic) leadership is generally the most effective leadership style. Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. In Lewin’s study, children in this group were less productive than the members of the authoritarian group, but their contributions were of a much higher quality.
Participative leaders encourage group members to participate, but retain the final say over the decision-making process. Group members feel engaged in the process and are more motivated and creative.
Delegative (Laissez-Fair)
Researchers founds that children under delegative (laissez-fair) leadership were the least productive of all three groups. The children in this group also made more demands on the leader, showed little cooperation, and were unable to work independently.
Delegative leaders offer little or no guidance to group members and leave decision-making up to group members. While this style can be effective in situations where group members are highly qualified in an area of expertise, it often leads to poorly defined roles and a lack of motivation.
As my nurse manager it could be Ma’am Luisa Valencia our dearest clinical coordinator, she used the style of a participating/ democratic leadership that she always offer her guidance to his students and I believe that she may be a chief nurse or a dean someday.
The bad points of the selected style are: there are no bad points on this type of leadership unless your followers/ members are hard to motivate.
3. Using description, write at least two (2) simple paragraphs telling how your work and attitude get affected by your supervisor's (or immediate superior's) style of leadership.
My work and attitude have change by my supervisors in terms of teaching us what should be the right to do and what are the good for me.
They also influenced me to study hard, to read books, that lately I often made, and they influenced my attitude in terms of having respect to our seniors.
4. Site true-to-life situations where good management is very evident. Identify its good and bad points. Simultaneously, site a true-to-life situation where mismanagement is also evident. What are the effects of mismanagement?
This situation is about on how I make a case study in nursing:
In case study you should plan first what is your topic and setting an objectives, and next is your decision if you will satisfied on your topic, and if your ready to that, look for the materials/ tools that you can be used in the case, next you can now start on doing the over view of the case, profiles, assessment, NCP, Pathophysiology, and drug study. And for the mismanagement: if your not study well about the topic, it’s hard to defend your topic and it is a big effect in management when you missed the most important thing in managing, the focusing in your topic.
Explain exhaustively the role of the Nurse Manager as an Organizer, a Director, and a Controller.
A nurse manager is always focusing on his group and to his client on how to give quality care. He organizes the plan on how to do it. He also see to it what are the interventions needed by the client. As a controller, he manages his staff their plan and their effective interventions needed by the client.
The nurse manager also evaluates the performance of his member,is it effective or not.
What are the Leadership styles according to Kurt Lewin? Then choose a Nurse Manager (except me, please) whom you have observed this 2nd semester (it could be a Chief Nurse, Supervisor, Staff Nurse, CI, Dean, Coordinator) and describe which leadership style do you think is used by your chosen nurse manager. Explain why you think it is the style used. Moreover, identify the good and bad points of the leadership style selected.
Our Dean uses the Participative style of leadership. She offers guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. The participation of other member of the organization is much valued.
This kind of style of leadership encourages group members to participate, but retain the final say over the decision-making process. Group members feel engaged in the process and are more motivated and creative.
Using description, write at least two (2) simple paragraphs telling how your work and attitude get affected by your supervisor's (or immediate superior's) style of leadership.
Our supervisor’s style of leadership motivated us to work hard and give the necessary interventions to our client properly. She made us feel that we are also part of the organization. She allows us to give any opinions regarding the care of our client.
Site true-to-life situations where good management is very evident. Identify its good and bad points. Simultaneously, site a true-to-life situation where mismanagement is also evident. What are the effects of mismanagement?
A very simple example is in our group. When our leader is not that very effective, us, as his member loss interest to cooperate to him. We loss the effectiveness to give the necessary care to our client. When there is requirement, we submitted it late because our leader is not that effective and good.
Yes, we, as his member must do our job but the group depend on him on how he handled the group effectively.
On our next rotation we change our leader. And by experience, we do it as one. Our leader is very good and effective and we do our job well. We participated well as a group.

1. Explain exhaustively the role of the Nurse Manager as an Organizer, a Director, and a Controller.
Ans: The role of the nurse manager as: a) an organizer: She ensures the necessary human and physical recourses are available to achieve the planning goals. The nurse manager uses the nursing process to plan patient care and select intervention to achieve patient goal. Whether working alone or with others, the nurses then organizes care and, as needed, work with or plans for additional staff to achieve patient goals, b) a director: She give the others persons work. She also gives other and direction to other to attain quality of care, c) and a controlling: she compares the actual performance to a standard and revising the original plan as needed to achieve the goals. The nurse control pt. care given by themselves and other to ensure that the patient goal is met.
Ans: the leadership style according to Kurt Lewin is a) Autocratic leadership, b) Democratic leadership, c) Laissez-faire, d) Bureaucratic leadership. Nurse Manager that I choose whom I observed this second semester is Mrs. Judith Malab, RN, MSN. She uses the leadership style Democratic leadership because it involved the leader and follower in the decision making. The good is that all of us is like a leader we have our own decision making to work as an independent nurse.
3. Using description, write at least two (2) simple paragraphs telling how your work and attitude get affected by your supervisor's (or immediate superior's) style of leadership.
Ans: My work and attitude get affected by my supervisor by encouraging me to study hard. She teaches and encouraged me to practice as an independent student nurse. She gives me an assignment that I use my critical thinking.
4. Site true-to-life situations where good management is very evident. Identify its good and bad points. Simultaneously, site a true-to-life situation where mismanagement is also evident. What are the effects of mismanagement?
Ans: The true to life situation where good management is very evident is when we have a ward class in the hospital, all of my group mates and I are work together to become our ward class is successful and our patient will understand our topic. They will gain knowledge to us on health care. The good effect is that all of us will enhance our knowledge and we work together.
